Overview

Product overview

Biocomma frits for DNA extraction can be selected as hydrophobic or hydrophilic. Hydrophobic frits are widely used to separate the solid phase of a bacterial lysate from the liquid, with pressure replacing the centrifugation step; hydrophilic frits are widely used for purifying particulate DNA.

Frits for these columns need an optimized pore size and a good match to the column tube, sometimes with extra filter material, to ensure a clarified filtrate. Binding-column frits give a gravity flow rate of 1-2 mL/min (1-2 drops per second), though flow still depends on sorbent particle size and uniformity. For spin columns, the filter piece is typically UHMW-PE, mixed fiber or PP and acts as a support: the silica membrane cannot withstand high-speed centrifugation by itself, and high-speed centrifugation improves DNA recovery.

Catalog sizes cover 96-well plates, 2 mL, 15 mL and 50 mL spin columns and larger gravity columns, all packed 1,000 per pack. Each production step is recorded in an ERP system.

Features

Key features

  • 01

    Hydrophobic or hydrophilic

Hydrophobic frits separate bacterial lysate solids under pressure; hydrophilic frits are used to purify particulate DNA.

  • 02

    Matched to the column

Optimized pore size and fit with the column tube, with optional extra filter material for a clarified filtrate.

  • 03

    Supports high-speed centrifugation

The filter piece supports the silica membrane during high-speed centrifugation, which improves DNA recovery.

  • 04

    Gravity flow rate

Binding-column frits give 1-2 mL/min (1-2 drops per second) under gravity.

  • 05

    Wide format coverage

Sizes for 96-well, 2 mL, 15 mL and 50 mL spin columns and gravity columns up to 300 mL.

  • 06

    Traceable production

Each stage of frit production is recorded in an ERP system.
