MacConkey Agar from Biocomma is supplied in two formulations. GF1007F (dehydrated) and KL1007F (granulated) are intended for isolating and differentiating lactose-fermenting from lactose-non-fermenting Gram-negative enteric bacilli and cite ISO 21567. GF617F is a separate pharmaceutical formulation listed for the selective isolation of Escherichia coli in pharmaceutical products (CP/EP/USP).
All versions rely on bile salts, neutral red and crystal violet, with lactose as the differentiating carbohydrate, and give a final pH of 7.1±0.2. The general version is prepared at 51.5 g per litre and the pharmaceutical version at 50.0 g per litre; both are boiled to dissolve and autoclaved at 121 °C for 15 minutes.
