Salmonella Chromogenic Agar is used for the detection and isolation of Salmonella species, including S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi. A combined chromogenic and selective mix gives Salmonella typhimurium mauve colonies, whereas Escherichia coli develops blue-green colonies.
Prepare by suspending 34.9 g in 1 L of purified water and boiling with frequent agitation until dissolved. The medium must not be overheated or autoclaved. Final pH is 7.6±0.2, and sealed product keeps for 2 years in a dark place at room temperature. Reference photographs show S. typhimurium ATCC 14028, E. coli ATCC 25922, Proteus mirabilis CMCC(B)49005 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212.
