Gas chromatography (GC) and GC-MS systems in Jordan

Gas chromatography separates volatile compounds in a heated column, and a detector identifies or measures them. Choose the detector by the question (FID for hydrocarbons, ECD for halogens, mass spectrometry for identification), then plan carrier-gas supply and service early.

How to choose: GC and GC-MS systems

  1. 01

    Detector

FID for general organics, ECD for halogenated compounds, TCD for permanent gases, and single or triple quadrupole MS when you must identify unknowns or reach trace limits.

  2. 02

    Injection and sampling

Split/splitless for liquids, headspace for residual solvents and volatiles, thermal desorption for air. An autosampler is the biggest throughput gain.

  3. 03

    Carrier and detector gases

Helium, hydrogen or nitrogen carrier plus FID gases drive running cost. On-site hydrogen and zero-air generators avoid cylinder logistics.

  4. 04

    Method compliance

Factory-configured analysers for ASTM or ISO methods shorten validation for petrochemical and fuel testing.

  5. 05

    Service and software

Check local service engineers, spare parts availability, and software that supports audit trails if you work under GLP or GMP.

Typical applications

  • Petrochemical and fuel quality (ASTM/ISO methods)
  • Environmental: pesticides, VOCs, water and soil
  • Food and flavour analysis
  • Pharmaceutical residual solvents
  • Forensic and toxicology screening

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GC and GC-MS?

A GC with a conventional detector (such as FID) quantifies compounds by retention time. GC-MS adds a mass spectrometer that identifies each compound by its mass spectrum, which is essential for unknowns, confirmation and trace-level work.

Can I run a GC without gas cylinders?

Yes. Hydrogen and zero-air generators supply FID and carrier gas on demand, removing cylinder deliveries and giving constant purity. Helium alternatives such as hydrogen or nitrogen need method re-validation.

Does Al-Shaker provide GC installation and training in Jordan?

Yes. Installation, commissioning, operator training and maintenance contracts are delivered by the Al-Shaker technical team across Jordan and MENA.
